I always used Ctrl+Alt+SysRq+ (whatever key was appropriate) – most often b or o, which are the easiest to reach in that stretch. Is the Ctrl superfluous?

Yes, you don’t need the “Ctrl” button for the SysReq key to work.

I suspect one should not try using these in a virtual machine (VMWare, VirtualBox) when it’s running on a linux host. On a Winblows host these should affect the guest OS correctly.
